My journey in economics has been deeply intentional, driven by a belief that thoughtful policy and grounded research can transform lives across generations.
Hi! I’m Dumebi Oluwole Newretta — formerly Dumebi Iyeke Newretta — a Pan-African, Nigerian-born economist and thought leader who believes that economics doesn’t need to sound like rocket science to make a real difference. I’ve studied inflation, exchange rates, and investment risk across Africa — but more importantly, I want to help people understand how these big ideas affect our everyday lives.
Born in Nigeria on April 30, 1997, my journey in economics has been deeply intentional, driven by a belief that thoughtful policy and grounded research can transform lives across generations. I graduated with first-class honours in Economics from Babcock University, finishing top of my department, and went on to earn a Master’s degree in Economics from the University of Lagos. During this period, I was privileged to learn and collaborate with some of the finest minds in the field — including renowned economist Bismarck Rewane.
Today, I serve as a Senior Africa Economist at Stears, where I lead macroeconomic research and policy analysis covering emerging markets across Africa. From inflation trends to investment risk analysis, I’ve authored over 100 proprietary research reports — helping decision-makers, investors, and institutions navigate complex economies with clarity.
But economics isn’t all I care about.
I’m deeply committed to social impact. I regularly speak in schools and communities — advocating for girl child empowerment, public health awareness, and skill development. I believe that policy isn’t powerful unless it serves people, especially the most vulnerable.
I’m also a proud wife, mother, and firstborn of a close-knit family of six. That sense of family is central to who I am — it shapes how I lead, how I serve, and how I envision a better future for Africa and her people.
And when I’m not working? You’ll probably find me reading something insightful or singing along to something soulful. I’m grateful for both the analytical and the artistic sides of life — they keep me grounded, curious, and open.
This space will serve as an extension of my thoughts and voice — a place where data meets humanity and where economic ideas translate into real-world impact.
Whether it's the rising price of garri or the value of the naira at your local Bureau de Change, these aren’t abstract issues. They’re personal. Through this blog, I want to break down the data, share honest insights, and help you see economics the way I do: as a powerful tool for shaping a better future.
